The Alpha, Beta and The Sigma
Most of us are familiar with Alphas and Betas, but Sigmas are a recently defined archetype. The Alpha, which most of us are familiar with the archetype and are generally considered dominant and in-control. Alpha’s are generally considered assertive, take charge and others look to them for leadership; a lion. Beta’s are friendly, and exhibit empathy toward others. They tend to lack confidence and many times end up serving the demands of the Alpha’s.
However, the Sigma’s don’t conform to social hierarchies. They have traits of the Alpha’s strength and leadership, but don’t seek the attention that an Alpha needs. They have a dominant exterior but are always looking to help others. The Sigma will put themselves at risk so that others can benefit from their hard work. They are independent operators and thinkers. They act as Black Panther in the jungle; independent and dominant. The Sigma Investor™ also acts independently from group think or decades of limited thinking. The Sigma Investor™ is a calculated executioner of exceptional stock market profits.
Reframing the Alpha
If you are an Alpha, the good news is that you too can be an ultra-successful investor! The bad news is that you will need to reframe your Alpha thought process that serves you so well in the other areas of your life. Think of the Market Master as your football coach. The game of football allows Alphas, as individuals within a team environment, to thrive, right? To succeed in football, the individual Alpha must operate and respect their coaches, their offensive and defensive coordinators, the quarterback etc. in a hierarchical chain of command. When comparing football to investing, there also is a hierarchical chain of command. There is the market itself which I refer to as The Market Master, there is your system and also your own psychology, which is a surprise to those just starting out as investors. The Market Master allows the Alpha to thrive, but…and this is a big ol’ but…you must listen and obey without questioning The Market Master or you WILL NOT be successful in the long-term. Now you can get lucky, but eventually, The Market Master will eat you alive. It’s just that simple. If you disobey your football coach, how often will you get to play? Not too often. With stock market investing, The Market Master will bench you and mentally destroy your psyche.
Introducing The Sigma
A Sigma is someone who’s also self-assured, but instead of needing a team or crowd of observers, they are independent, and tend to keep to themselves. Instead of seeking the spotlight or validation from others, they are all about carving their own path and doing their own thing in the shadows. Even though they may seem like a loner, they are surprisingly perceptive and observant, always picking up on what’s happening around them. They operate with humility.
If it’s helpful for you to picture a well-known individual as to what a Sigma Investor might act like, picture an Elon Musk or a Keanu Reeves as stock investors. Smart, calm, observant, patient, unassuming and yet straight up badasses that get results. They don’t need a posse following them around. They don’t seek the limelight. They aren’t the loudest ones in the room. They simply let their results speak for themselves.
Observing, watching, waiting, cautious, calculated and confident. Sigmas have this knack for understanding people and social dynamics at a deep level. While they might form temporary connections, they are not one to be tied down by the norms and pressures of society. They value freedom and flexibility above all. They don’t want to be weighed down while in pursuit of their goals and objectives. They are thinkers and executioners of their plan. They will attack when necessary, but you can bet once they do attack, they are fully prepared and ready. They give 100 percent to any endeavor but choose those endeavors very carefully. They can do it alone or with a team, as long as that team doesn’t slow them down because they already have their plan to succeed. They had been formulating it for days, weeks, months or in some cases, even years.
Despite going against the usual dominance and status-seeking norms, the Sigma finds success and fulfillment in their own unique ways. They leave a lasting impact on those who get to know and appreciate the depth of their intriguing character.
